Calc98 on an iPaq

Pocket PC is a palmtop format PDA-type device with a very high specification which runs the Windows CE 3 operating system. Typically they have a high resolution (240x320) colour screen, audio for recording and MP3 playback, infrared and serial or USB ports for synchronisation with a PC, and expansion through CompactFlash or other types of memory cards and devices. You can use it as a powerful PDA, MP3 player, audio recorder and e-book reader. Its high performance and memory capacity means it can also run applications such as dictionary/thesaurus, mapping, spreadsheets and word processors. Unlike a laptop, they can be kept in your pocket and are ready to go - no setting up or booting up.

The latest version of the operating system from Microsoft is called Windows Mobile 2003, and devices are now available with it installed. The new version has a number of enhancements and supports the ARM processor family only.

Now our calculator software is available to run on Pocket PC. That means you can use it like a real pocket calculator!

Here we list some of our recommendations in various categories. The links take you to amazon.com where you can see more information or buy a calculator. Most are offered at a considerable discount to the list price.

Hewlett Packard Jornada 720

Hewlett Packard Jornada 720

When WindowsCE devices first came out, this is what they looked like. Now only HP seems to have continued with the "Clamshell" format. These devices have a keyboard which means you can use them like a mini-laptop. But the mouse is replaced with a stylus. You really need to set this down on a desk to use it, or forget using the keyboard. In terms of size, it is one for the briefcase rather than the pocket. Windows CE is modular and can be configured according to the hardware, and so the user interface on these devices is quite different from the Pocket PC and is much closer to a desktop operating system, with desktop icons, folders, a "Start" button etc. The large screen makes it much more suitable for web browsing than a Pocket PC, and the keyboard makes touch typing just a possible. Specifications:

  • integrated 56 Kbps V.90 modem
  • docking station for easy connection to a PC
  • AC adapter and rechargeable battery
  • 32 MB of RAM
  • 206 MHz StrongARM Processor
