Sharp Corporation is a Japanese electronics company with its headquarters in Abeno-ku, Osaka. It was founded in 1912 by Tokuji Hayakawa, who invented a propelling pencil which he called the Ever-Sharp, and which gave rise to the company name.
After Sharp's pencil factory was destroyed in an earthquake in 1923 it was reinvented as a manufacturer of radio sets which were launched in 1925. From this point the company specialized in electronics, starting to manufacture television sets as early as 1953.
In 1964 Sharp produced an all-transistor desktop calculator, a world first. In 1973 Sharp also pioneered the LCD calculator display technology that over the next few years would replace the LED and vacuum fluorescent displays, and made possible the first credit card sized calculator in1979.
